Forest School

At Portfields Primary, we believe in fostering a love for the natural world and providing our pupils with enriching learning experiences beyond the classroom walls. This is where our Forest School program comes in, offering a unique opportunity for children to immerse themselves in the outdoors, explore their surroundings, and connect with nature.

A Day in the Woods:

Each year group, from Reception to Year 6, embarks on a forest school adventure once a half term. During these dedicated sessions, children are transported to a designated woodland area, equipped with a sense of wonder and a thirst for discovery.

Our experienced Forest School leaders guide them through a range of engaging activities, tailored to their age and learning needs. These activities may include:

  • Nature hunts: Embarking on exciting quests to identify different trees, plants, and insects, fostering observation skills and appreciation for biodiversity.
  • Building shelters: Utilizing natural materials like branches and leaves, children collaborate and problem-solve to create their own woodland havens, nurturing creativity and teamwork.
  • Storytelling and singing: Gathering around a crackling campfire, children listen to captivating stories and participate in traditional songs, fostering a sense of community and connection to nature.
  • Cooking on open fires: Under the watchful eye of adults, older children learn the art of campfire cooking, from preparing simple snacks to toasting marshmallows, fostering independence and life skills.

Early Years Exploration:

Recognizing the importance of early exposure to the natural world, our EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) pupils visit Forest School weekly as part of their ongoing learning. These regular sessions allow them to:

  • Develop a sense of wonder and curiosity about the outdoors.
  • Engage in sensory play, exploring different textures, sounds, and smells found in nature.
  • Practice fine and gross motor skills through activities like climbing, digging, and building with natural materials.
  • Learn to appreciate the importance of caring for the environment.

More Than Just Fun:

Forest School is not just about fun and games; it offers a multitude of benefits for our pupils:

  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem: Overcoming challenges and mastering new skills in a supportive environment fosters a sense of accomplishment and self-belief.
  • Develops social and communication skills: Working together in collaborative activities encourages teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Enhances creativity and imagination: The natural world provides endless opportunities for exploration and imaginative play, fostering creativity and critical thinking.
  • Promotes a connection with nature: Spending time outdoors fosters a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world, encouraging environmental responsibility.
