Handwriting

Handwriting at Portfields Primary School

At Portfields Primary School, we believe that developing a fluent, legible, and personal handwriting style is a vital skill that supports children’s confidence and success across the entire curriculum. To achieve this, we use Nelson Handwriting, a comprehensive whole-school programme designed to help all children meet high curriculum expectations.

Our Approach

The Nelson Handwriting scheme provides a consistent framework from the early years through to the end of Key Stage 2. The programme is structured to ensure that every child develops a hand that is not only easy to read but also efficient and comfortable.

Key Features of the Programme

The scheme is built on a developmental progression that grows with your child:

  • Building Foundations: For our younger learners, the focus begins with pattern practice and motor skills. These activities are essential for developing the physical coordination and muscle memory required for neat writing.

  • Engaging Activities: We use a variety of fun, practical activities to bring handwriting to life, ensuring that pupils stay motivated as they refine their letter formation.

  • A Personal Style: As children progress, the programme helps them move from simple letter formation to a fluent, joined cursive style, eventually allowing them to develop a confident and personal "hand" for life.

  • Classroom Technology: We utilise a range of digital resources and online tools to model correct letter formation and joins clearly on our interactive boards.

Why Good Handwriting Matters

Mastering handwriting allows children to focus their creative energy on the content of their writing. By providing a clear, structured path to success, we ensure our pupils take great pride in the presentation of their work across all subjects.

"Our goal is for every child to leave Portfields with a legible, flowing, and mature handwriting style that serves them well into their secondary education."
