Healthy Snacks

Healthy Breaktime Snacks at Portfields

Most children need a little boost at morning break to keep their energy levels up and help them stay focused until lunchtime. At Portfields, we encourage our pupils to bring in healthy snacks packed with vitamins and minerals—ideally with no added salt, fat, or sugar.

Not only do these snacks count towards their "5-a-day," but they also play a vital role in keeping children alert and ready to learn. We understand that thinking of new snack ideas during a busy week can be a challenge! Our goal is to work alongside you and the children to encourage healthy choices while also reducing single-use packaging and food waste.

Practical Tips

  • Containers: Please provide snacks in a small, reusable container clearly labelled with your child's name.

  • EYFS & KS1: Children in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 receive a piece of fruit or vegetable every day through the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme, so an additional snack may not be necessary for these year groups.

Suggested Snack List

If you would like to send a snack in with your child, please choose from the following options:

  • Vegetable Sticks: Celery, cucumber, peppers, or carrots. A variety of colours ensures a good mix of vitamins.

  • Dairy: A piece of cheddar cheese or a Babybel.

  • Fruit: Fresh or dried fruit is an excellent choice. Options include pineapple, mango, kiwi, plain raisins, apricots, blueberries, or sliced banana.

  • Savoury & Grains: Breadsticks, plain pretzels, malt loaf, oat/rice cakes, or small pitta breads. These provide the carbohydrates needed to sustain energy levels between meals.

  • Homemade Treats: Flapjacks or other oat/whole-grain based snacks (Nut Free).

Important: Nut-Free School

Portfields Primary School has pupils with severe nut allergies. All snacks must be strictly nut-free. Please check the ingredients of any shop-bought items or homemade snacks carefully before sending them in.

Our Approach

We aim for a common-sense approach to healthy eating. The key is to keep it nutritious: please do not send in chocolate, sweets, or crisps.
